At California House we provide respite care for up to 5 adults at a time. All of the guests are over the age of 18 years.
The adults staying are called guests and are treated as such. The purpose of the house is to support guests who are having a short break from their family home, to extend their independent living skills and social and emotional skills, and by enabling opportunities to put these skills into practice.
Guests meet together at the beginning of each stay to discuss activities they would like to undertake.
One of the main priorities of the home is to support the client to become involved in community activities of their own choice. Examples of activities might be swimming, cycling, shopping trips, bowling, museum visits, bar meals and the cinema.
Guests are supported to continue any regular activities they participate in, if they wish, when they stay in the house. This would include attendance of religious services.
Staff are committed to upholding the dignity, human and civil rights of the people who stay in the house.
