WE are delighted that we now have 19 Carlisle Mencap service users signed up to do the Round The World Challenge – and some of them have been showing off the eye-catching T-shirts and ‘passports’ that have arrived to promote this major fundraising scheme for 2021.
But there is plenty of time to join in the Challenge, so don’t hesitate to get in touch! Give REBECCA CAREY or DAN CAMPBELL a call on 01228 672980.
Carlisle Mencap has joined up with the national Mencap society, in partnership with Sport England and The National Lottery, to deliver Round The World Challenge.
Round the World Challenge aims to support people with a learning disability to get out and get active in a way that is flexible, fun and motivating by turning hours of exercise into miles.
So how does it work?
Round the World Challenge is all about turning hours of fun physical activities and sports into a round the world adventure. Choose from three different routes, log activity hours and receive regular rewards throughout.
It is aimed at people with a learning disability aged 16 and over to take part and choose fun physical activities that will make up your journey.
There are three different routes:
1: UK = Hours required 20
2: EUROPE = Hours required 40
3: WORLD = Hours required 100.
You choose which route to do. You could even do a combination of two or three routes. And any physical activity counts towards the challenge.
Here at Carlisle Mencap we are planning a series of activities for our service users throughout 2021. At the moment these are involving a series of Zoom meetings which Rebecca and Dan have been supervising through our Independence Studio using the excellent series of Keep Fit Exercise videos produced by the Studio.
With the timetable to lifting Lockdown restrictions now announced, the plan is to try and phase out the Zoom meetings from April and do more activities outdoors and in gyms and swimming pools. These hopefully will include walking groups; cycling at Watchtree; gym sessions at Carlisle Youth Zone; geocaching (in which participants use a Global Positioning System receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches"); and much more!
And remember, if you take part you get a FREE T-shirt – see Tim modelling one of these in the photo! – a ‘passport’ to tick off the places you ‘visit’ on your route, plus medals and certificates once you complete your challenge.
We also hope to hold a ‘Round The World Challenge Celebration Achievement Event’ featuring a sports and fun day for people of all ages and abilities at the end of June, at a venue in Carlisle yet to be confirmed.
So keep an eye on our Facebook page, Twitter account and this website for updates. We also have a special section on our Gallery page of this website dedicated to photos featuring our service users doing the Challenge.
Remember, you can also give REBECCA or DAN a call on 01228 672980 for more information.
