Our Community Heroes!
CARLISLE Mencap's CEO Sheila Gregory has won Person of the Year in The Cumberland News Community Heroes Awards while Rebecca Aitken was Specially Commended in the Volunteer of the Year category.
The awards took place at Carlisle Racecourse on Thursday, July 4. Sheila's award was a fitting climax to a busy year for our charity which has been celebrating its 50th anniversary having been formed back in 1968.
Sheila has helped transform the charity from a group of parents with children with learning difficulties into the fourth largest Mencap group in the country.
Meanwhile Rebeca Aitken was thrilled to be Specially Commended in the Volunteer of the Year category. She is a volunteer at our Girls' Club and has racked up more than 60 hours of volunteering. It was fitting that in the week she got the special commendation, she joined team leader Rebecca Carey and events and fundraising officer Phil Taylor to help the Give A Day To The City Week initiative by helping in the revamp of Portland Square off Warwick Road.
Chris Story, editor of The Cumberland News, said: "The evening is one of the highlights of our year as we recognise and reward the heroes in our community."
