AS we head into autumn and winter there are a lot of events coming up to help raise money for Carlisle Mencap!
It starts this coming Monday, September 23, when there will be a fundraising day for Carlisle Mencap thanks to the staff at the Virgin Money bank at 4, Devonshire Street, in Carlisle from 9am to 5pm.
There will be a raffle for a luxury hamper with items donated by local businesses, while for a donation you can have teas, coffees and cakes made and served by the bank staff. The Virgin Money London Marathon in 2020 has chosen Mencap as its official charity so Monday is all part of the build-up to the big sporting event, and all being well Carlisle Mencap’s running representative – team leader Dan Campbell – will be there on Monday to boost his sponsorship target!
Saturday October 12 is the day of the Fab-Seiling For Others event at Carlisle East Fire Station off Eastern Way, Durranhill.
Carlisle Mencap’s chairwoman Christine Bowditch, who is also chairwoman of Cumbria County Council, will be one of four people abseiling down the training tower at the fire station. Her chosen charity, obviously, is Carlisle Mencap. Also taking part in the daring challenge is the High Sheriff of Cumbria, Marcia Reid Fotheringham, who will be raising funds for our friends at People First; Carol Fish, a director at the solicitors firm Cartmell Shepherd, is taking part on behalf of the Oak Tree Animals’ charity; and Kerrie Higham, from The Well Communities, who will be doing it to raise money for that good cause.
As well as the abseiling event, Carlisle Mencap will be having a stall at the event which also features a family fun day with free activities and food stands.
A quick mention that on Tuesday October 15, staff from the Cumberland Building Society are generously giving up their time to spend a day at our Grace Little Centre to help tidy up the front of our facility for children in north Carlisle. Come along and give them your support!
On Thursday, October 17, there will be a fundraising quiz at The Beehive pub in Warwick Road. Thursday night quizzes are a regular attraction at this popular pub and we are grateful that on October 17 all proceeds will be going to Carlisle Mencap. It costs just £1 per person to enter so get your teams together! A fundraising raffle will also be held in the interval and the quiz starts at 8.30pm.
Harraby Catholic Club has kindly once again given us their main function room to let us have another of our popular Halloween Disco nights, and this year it is actually on Halloween – October 31 – starting at 6pm.
Admission prices to be confirmed – so watch this space – but our favourite regular DJ Damien will be doing the sounds once more and there will be a delicious buffet courtesy of Josie and her team at our Doves Café.
On Saturday, November 9, three members of our staff – CEO Sheila Gregory and team leaders Morag Rowell and Rachael McGarry – will be doing a ’21 At 21’ sponsored walk around Talkin Tarn near Brampton. The 21-mile challenge marks the 21st anniversary of Sheila being Carlisle Mencap’s chief executive and all staff, trustees, service users, family and friends – and the general public – are more than welcome to come along and support the three walkers and join them along the route. Again, all monies raised go towards Carlisle Mencap funds.
Saturday, November 23 sees Carlisle Mencap having a stall in the Asda store at Kingstown, Carlisle, from 10am to 4pm. We will be handing out leaflets to customers about our vital services as well as having a tombola and the 'Name The Elephant' competition!
Thursday, December 12 and it is quiz time again with the return of the Big Festive Quiz at the Old Fire Station in Carlisle, organised once again by our events and fundraising officer Phil Taylor. Starting at 7pm, the quiz will feature rounds with a festive theme and it costs £10 per team to enter.
Finally, of the events confirmed before the end of 2019, Carlisle Mencap is delighted to have a stall at the Houghton Farmers’ Christmas Market from 9am to 1pm at Houghton Village Hall on Saturday, December 14. We will be selling crafts and Christmas decorations made by the members of our Independence Studio at the Grace Little Centre, as well as cakes and other goodies from our Doves Café!
For more details about any of the above events, contact PHIL TAYLOR on 01228 674393 or email [email protected] and remember to keep a regular eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as this website, for any further updates.
